What is the primary use of fog lamps?

Fog lamps are specifically designed to illuminate the road directly in front of a vehicle during conditions of reduced visibility, such as fog, snow, or heavy rain. Their low and wide beam pattern helps to minimize the amount of light that is reflected back off of the fog, rain, or snow, which can occur with standard headlights.

Using fog lights during these adverse weather conditions enhances the driver's ability to see and to be seen, as they improve visibility at shorter distances where it is most needed. The beam is typically aimed downward at a sharper angle compared to regular headlights, allowing it to cut through the low-lying fog or precipitation without creating glare that can hinder visibility for both the driver and other road users.

In contrast, while enhancing visibility at night is important, it is not the primary function of fog lights, which are meant for specific weather conditions.
